Matthew McCarthy, creator and founder of StoveGuard, started his business in a one-car garage on a mission to find an easier way to keep messy stovetops clean and free of grease and grime. Disappointed with available products—those awful little self-cut squares, those incredibly thin, cheap three-part liners—he knew there had to be a better way. After much research and development, the perfect solution was launched and found its way into hundreds of thousands of kitchens across the country: custom fit StoveGuard stovetop protectors.

An interview with StoveGuard founder Matthew McCarthy and Brennan, Manna & Diamond, LLC member Matthew Schonauer meant to provide real world examples of the challenges presented when growing businesses with tight budgets make decisions on legal protection for core intellectual property assets and operational risk.
